What is Charter School Homeschooling?

Some states let you homeschool by enrolling in a public charter school's independent study program. You teach at home. The school provides funding, a credentialed teacher, and handles state reporting.

How it works

  • You enroll your child in a charter school, but they learn at home
  • The school assigns a credentialed teacher who meets with you regularly
  • You receive funding ($2,000-$4,300/year in California) for curriculum and activities
  • Your child takes state standardized tests
  • Your child keeps their IEP and special education services

The tradeoff

Charter homeschooling gives you funding, teacher support, accredited transcripts, and IEP preservation. In exchange, you accept state testing, regular meetings, secular-only curriculum requirements, and accountability reporting. Families who want complete freedom with no oversight typically prefer filing independently (PSA in California).
