Homeschooling in Wyoming? No paperwork required.
no requirements- Wyoming requires no notification at all!
- No standardized testing required
- Wyoming is one of the easiest states to homeschool in
Wyoming is now one of the freest states in the country for homeschooling. The Homeschool Freedom Act (HB 46), which took effect on July 1, 2025, eliminated the previous requirement to submit your curriculum to the local school board. Today, Wyoming requires no notification, no testing, no reporting, and no curriculum approval. If your child is already enrolled in public school, you simply submit a withdrawal notice — and you are homeschooling.

What to know about homeschooling in Wyoming
Wyoming earns a "no regulation" classification because, after HB 46, there is genuinely nothing to file with the state. Under WS 21-4-101(a)(vi), a home-based educational program must provide a sequentially progressive curriculum in seven subjects: reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature, and science. But no one reviews your curriculum, tests your child, or asks for progress reports. The state trusts you to educate your children.
Compulsory education in Wyoming runs from age 7 through 16 — a narrower window than most states, and there is no mandatory kindergarten. There are no minimum instructional hours or days specified in the homeschool statute, though 175 days is the public school standard under WS 21-4-301 and serves as a reasonable benchmark.
Where Wyoming is still catching up is in access to public school resources. There is no statutory right to dual enrollment or part-time public school courses, and policies vary by district. Extracurricular access at the high school level does exist, governed by the Wyoming High School Activities Association. The state also enacted a universal $7,000 education savings account — the Steamboat Legacy Scholarship under WS 21-2-901 et seq. — in 2024, but the program has been blocked by court injunction since July 2025 and no funds have been disbursed while a Wyoming Supreme Court decision remains pending.

Wyoming-specific tips
Practical guidanceNo paperwork required — just start teaching. After HB 46 (2025), there is no notification, no curriculum submission, and no annual filing. If your child is currently in public school, submit a written withdrawal notice to the school and keep a copy for your records.
Cover the seven required subjects. Wyoming law specifies reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature, and science for home-based educational programs. The Constitution requirement applies to licensed non-religious private schools, not homeschools. Using a commercially published curriculum with defined grade levels naturally satisfies the "sequentially progressive" requirement.
Watch the Steamboat Legacy Scholarship. This $7,000/student ESA was enacted in 2024 but is currently blocked by court order. If the Wyoming Supreme Court lifts the injunction, homeschool families would be eligible, though participation would add assessment and instruction requirements.
Build transcripts for college even though the law does not require them. The University of Wyoming and Wyoming community colleges accept homeschool applicants with parent-prepared transcripts and ACT/SAT scores. The Hathaway Merit Scholarship may be available to homeschoolers, though eligibility criteria may differ.
Check with your district on extracurriculars. WHSAA governs high school athletics eligibility for homeschool students. Contact your local district and WHSAA for current participation rules.
Understand services for special needs children. IEP services end on withdrawal, but your district must develop a services plan for homeschooled children with disabilities and include you in the planning process. Child Find evaluations remain available through your local school district.
