Assessment Requirements in Maryland
What’s required
Varies by pathway. Home Instruction Supervised by the Local School System: "three_times_per_year"; Umbrella Program or Church-Exempt School: null
Maryland requires homeschooled students to complete a portfolio review. This is required three times per year.
What happens if your child doesn’t meet the minimum
First things first: this is not a crisis. States build in a structured process to help your family get back on track. Here’s how it works in Maryland:
- Process:
- Timeline: 30 days from receipt of written notification
- If scores still don’t improve: Child must be enrolled in a public or nonpublic school
The important thing to remember is that you have time and options. Many families use a low score as a chance to adjust their approach, try new curricula, or get targeted help in specific subjects.
Alternatives to standardized testing
This pathway does not use standardized testing. See your full state guide for details on how assessment works.
